I always feel a bit of relief when summer comes to an end. Don’t get me wrong, I love summer - eating outside, laying in the grass, flowy skirts and dresses, swimming in the sea, and the smell of suncream. But the internalised pressure I feel to make the best of every summer can make my free time feel more like a source of stress. This sense of hyper-optimisation is an undercurrent that frames so much of our free time today, and I think there’s a lot of content on social media that incentivises this, be it the 5-9 before my 9-5 trend, habit-stacking guides, or the simple impulse to document our downtime at all.
As we move into autumn, I’m trying to practice resisting the urge to maximise my free time, and instead of being consumed by outside noise of what I feel I “should” be doing, practice listening to my body instead.

This month’s guide to being Offline
Set an intention for your weekdays to adopt one habit that can curb your screentime by 1 hour.
Some of our favourites? Letting your phone die while you sleep, going for a daily walk without your phone, reading a bit of your book first thing when you wake up, watching a film without your phone present, cooking a new meal from a recipe book instead of a TikTok.
